Ceiling fan installation and repair in Los Angeles

A fan on a box rated to hold it. If the box up there is a light box, replacing it is part of the job and we say so first.

From 7am to 7pm, you get the part's name and the price inside two hours.

A fan going up in place of a ceiling light, or a new fan replacing an old one. Both start at the box in the ceiling, and so does a fan that wobbles.

What holds a fan up.

A ceiling fan moves, and it keeps moving for years. So it hangs from a box rated for a fan, fixed to the framing or to a brace between the joists. A plain light box is made to carry a light. A fan on one can work loose.

Fan-rated boxes and their braces ride with us, so a box swap is usually the same visit.

Getting to the box decides how long that takes. With an attic above, the new box goes in from there. With a room above and no attic, a small piece of ceiling may have to be opened and patched. That's on the quote before we book, and so is a second visit if the patch needs one.

Signs it's the box, or the fan.

  • The fan wobbles at every speed, not only on high.
  • It clicks or hums, or the canopy has slipped down from the ceiling.
  • The light kit flickers while the blades turn.
  • The pull chain has snapped or does nothing.
  • A new fan is still in its carton in the hall closet.

Where our work stops.

A fan on an existing box, wired where a light already was, is ours. So is a fan replacing a fan.

A fan where there's no fixture yet needs new wiring, and so does a second switch so the fan and the light work apart. Wiring that doesn't exist yet is an electrician's job, and we tell you so when you call.

Old wiring at the box is the other stop. Cloth-covered wire or knob-and-tube up there means the job stops. We tell you what we found and which trade it belongs to.

How a fan goes up.

  1. Tell us the room and what's up there now. A light or an old fan. If a photo helps, we ask for one when we call you back.
  2. We name the box and price the job. In writing. If the box has to change, that's on the quote.
  3. Power off at the breaker. The old fixture comes down, and we look at the box and the wiring before anything else.
  4. The box goes in, if it has to. Fan-rated, on its brace, fixed to the framing.
  5. The fan goes up. Wired, blades on and balanced, then tried at each speed.
  6. You see the box that came out. The floor stays covered while we work. Keep the old fixture or we take it away.

What a fan costs.

  • The box. A fan replacing a fan on a rated box is the simple case. A fan where a light was usually means a new box.
  • Getting to the box. An attic above, or a ceiling that has to be opened and patched.
  • The ceiling. A high or sloped ceiling takes a longer downrod or an angled mount, and a fan rated for the slope.
  • The fan. Most people pick their own. If you want us to bring one, say so before we book and it goes on the quote as its own line.

Asked about ceiling fans.

Can a fan go where my light is?

Usually, if there's framing up there to fix a rated box to. We check the box and what's above it before we quote. If the wiring at the box belongs to an electrician, you hear that first.

Can you stop a wobble without a new fan?

Often. On a sound box the wobble is in the blades, a loose blade screw or a bent blade bracket, and the blades get balanced at the same visit. A box that has worked loose does it too. None of those needs a new fan.

What if it starts to wobble again?

Fails within a year? Tell us what's broken. The return visit is ours.
