Sliding door repair in Los Angeles

A sliding patio door that drags, or takes two hands to open, is usually riding on worn rollers. Of everything that goes wrong with a patio door, that's the one we see most.

From 7am to 7pm, you get the part's name and the price inside two hours.

We fit new rollers in the door you have and set it level in the frame. If the track or the latch needs work too, that's on the quote before we book.

Signs it's the roller.

  • The door grinds or scrapes along the bottom track.
  • It stops dead partway open, always in one spot.
  • The panel sits crooked in the frame, with a wider gap at one corner.
  • The latch no longer lines up with its catch.
  • You can see daylight under one end of the door.
  • The handle has worked loose, or the latch has snapped.

The roller, and the track under it.

Each glass panel rides on two roller assemblies set into its bottom rail. Grit from the patio packs into the track, the nylon wheels wear flat, and the door ends up dragging metal on metal. New rollers lift it back off the track.

A track worn into a groove can wear out new rollers fast, so we look at it before we quote. If it needs repair first, the quote says so.

An older or unusual door may need its roller ordered. If so, you hear that now, and the visit is booked for when it lands.

The latch and the handle are part of the same job. On an older slider the latch is often brittle, and months of forcing a door that drags tends to crack it.

How a slider fix goes.

  1. Tell us what the door does. If a photo helps, we ask for one when we call you back.
  2. We name the roller and price the fix. In writing, with the roller on its own line.
  3. The panel comes out. It lifts off the track and goes down on a drop cloth.
  4. Old rollers out, new rollers in. The track gets cleaned while the panel is out.
  5. The door goes back and gets adjusted. Level in the frame, with the latch meeting its catch.
  6. You see the rollers that failed. Keep them or we take them away.

What a slider fix costs.

  • The roller your door takes. An unusual one has to be ordered.
  • The track. Clean and sound, or worn and in need of repair first.
  • The panel. A tall or heavy panel takes longer to lift out and set back.
  • The latch and the handle, if they're part of the job.

Labor for the fix is one number, in writing. The rollers come at what they cost, receipt attached. We don't mark parts up.

Asked about sliding doors.

Do I need a new door?

Rarely, for a door that drags. On a sound track, new rollers are the fix. A bent frame or broken glass is a different job, and we say so before we quote.

Can you fix the screen door on the same slider?

Yes, at the same visit. A screen door's rollers are a different part from the glass door's, and both go on the quote. More on screen repair.

The door won't lock. Is that the roller too?

Often. A door that has dropped on worn rollers no longer meets its catch, so the latch can't close. New rollers lift the door back to where the two meet. If the latch itself has cracked, it goes on the quote too.

What if it drags again?
